The Intercultural Classroom / CARLOS and GEORGE

Oct 8, 2010

On this day of class, I watched two videos. The first video that I watched is called “The intercultural classroom” which is about students in a classroom of different ethnic backgrounds. Each student had different communication styles which I found interesting because some are aggressive when they participant in discussions and others are quiet. For example, I found that Esteban is emotionally expressive and direct as he shares his feelings to the other students. However, Charlie doesn’t care about how Esteban feels as it seems he is interested in developing relationships with his classmates. Moreover, Mariko was the participant I had to focus on with Nema and Carol during discussion and we came to the conclusion that she seems scared, quiet, and indirect. In addition, we feel that she was emotionally restrained because she is always claim and didn’t care what the other people in class were talking about. In fact, she didn’t even want to be in the classroom with the other students as she is wishing that she could be somewhere else. Furthermore, all the other students in class had some similarity and differences in their communication style, but they were all arguing with each other and were not getting along.
The other video that I had watched in class was about a Boss name George and an employee named Carlos. They both have different communication styles as well as different opinions regarding the workplace. Carlos is focused on relationship with employees because he understands them and wants them to be comfortable at work. However, George doesn’t care about how his employees feel as he is just focused on tasks and numbers being done. Moreover, when Carlos tried to talk to George regarding a promotion, he was indirect because he wasn’t confident in what he was going to say to him. In addition, he didn’t want to have to sell himself for the assistant manager’s job because he has been working at the company for a long time. Unfortunately for Carlos, he did not get the promotion and may look for another job.
I enjoyed watching these two videos in class because I learned that every one can have different communication styles in how they approach and talk to others. In addition, being from a different ethic background could also be the reason because being raised in another country is the knowledge we are brought with.

  1. I want to share what I learn from community college in De Anza and Foothill college.

I have to focus on Mariko. In Eastern cultures, we do not have a lot of chances to talk or participate in class discussion due to many reasons.

Most of international students who come from Japan can speak and write English very well.

They are not used to speak English very much in front of their teacher. In general, girls are more smarter than boys when it comes to learn about subjects or topic in the classroom.

I attended many classes in De Anza and Foothill. I saw a lot of Japanese and Russian students.

Japanese students are not used to talk a lot in the classroom, but they get very good grade on every exam and quiz that we take in the classroom.

Do not forget that some japanese students get free grants from their government to attend some classes in the U.S.

I want to explain what I said about poor japanese people come to live in the U.S.

In general, average workers come from Japan earns more income or money than U.S. workers.

In Japan, he or she can make a lot of money except for this globe economic downturn.

In Japan, he or she can work at least two jobs if he or she wants to work.

In U.S., he or she can work at least two jobs, but time is very limited because he or she has to drive a car.

In Japan, taking the train is the best public transportation for most of people to take.

    I want to share.

When I was in high school, two of my professors live in Santa Cruz. They have to come San Jose to teach students.

Do you know how much time they spend on the street to drive a car for working to earn income?

In addition, one of my professors who teaches in De Anza College lives in Santa Cruz too. She always come in late to the classroom. Sometime, she has to cancel the classroom.

Those times three of my professors spend on the street. It is money for Japanese people.

One of my closed friends who lives in Japan for almost ten years has to come to live in the U.S.

In order to come to live in the U.S., he has to go back to Myanmar to get passort and come to the U.S.

During he works at the Japan, he has a girl friend. He tells his girl friend that he has opportunities to come to live in the U.S. He asks her to come to live in the U.S. She denies his request and says to him that she likes to live in Japan.

When I see from George point of the view, I think that he is making very good decision. I will tell you why?

George has to look at the numbers because he has to see whether his employees are productive or not.

In addition, he has to see numbers whether his employees are liked to work at the his company or not.

If they do not like to work at his company, he has to do something before it brings him to lose his profits.

Do not forget that the purpose is running the companies are making money and contribute to the communities that we love to live.

I said that in the classroom Carlos is weak because he has to know what position that he asks for.

Assistant manager has to do a lot of work tasks in his work places. In the work places, he has to manage very diversify work forces in his life.

If he likes to focus relationship with employees, he will lose some of his talent employees because some employees have different communication styles that he has.

In U.S., bosses are looking for employees who are challenges their authority because they want to succeed their business who know how to manage people.

If Carlos is weak, how he is going to manage people who come from different cultures than his cultures.

Finishing the job is another factor for bosses are looking.
