Alpha vs. Beta
The simulation activity performed last class was a very good start to exploring people's true perception of diversity. Being part of the Alpha group and getting instructions on how my culture was supposed to act was very unique. Main points I had to consider was being family oriented and male dominant in my actions. To me this was not strange because I have been around many different cultures and have realized that many of them perceive these traits as natural. After coming into contact with the Beta culture, it was easy to notice that our differences were great in depth. The main complication was the fact that they spoke another language that was no where close to being understood. This factor can be seen everyday as people of different backgrounds try to communicate and get tasks accomplished. This small simulation helps to expose you to uncertainty and differences that we should be able to adapt to if we desire to be above average leaders. In the end when both sides were given the opportunity to state what they thought about the other culture, and it was a comical debate to say the least. In retrospect, this culture game should open up the mind to accepting new ways of doing things. Without the various ideas people have in this world, the future would not hold as many opportunitites for individuals as it stands right now.
